Feliway and feline pheromone products: a buyer's guide for stress, marking, and intercat conflict
Synthetic facial pheromones, F3 and F4 fractions, friend vs classic, diffuser vs spray vs collar. What the evidence actually says, which product fits which problem, and the situations where pheromones meaningfully help.
Cats produce facial pheromones (the F3 fraction) when they rub their cheeks against objects. The pheromone marks the object as "familiar, safe." Feliway is the synthetic copy of that pheromone, sold as a diffuser, spray, or collar. The evidence supporting its use is mixed but generally positive for specific applications. Cost is low, downside is minimal, and many cats respond.
What the products do (and don't)
Feliway products do not sedate or pharmacologically alter the cat. They send an environmental signal that lowers perceived threat. Effects:
- Reduce anxiety in unfamiliar environments (move, vet visit, carrier).
- Reduce urine marking in some cats.
- Reduce intercat conflict (with Feliway Multicat formulation).
- Reduce scratching of inappropriate surfaces (with Feliway Feliscratch).
What they don't do:
- Treat clinical anxiety disorders (those need behavior modification + sometimes medication).
- Resolve serious intercat aggression.
- Substitute for a litter box audit, behavior protocol, or veterinary workup.
The evidence base is modest. Mills et al. (2011) found Feliway reduced anxiety scores compared to placebo in a triple-blind study. Other studies are mixed. Effect sizes are moderate, not dramatic.

Diffuser vs spray vs collar
Diffuser
Plug-in device that emits pheromone continuously into a room.
Best for: ongoing environmental stress (new home, ongoing intercat conflict, ongoing urine marking). Coverage: ~700 sq ft per diffuser. Most homes need 1-2. Cost: $300-400/year if continuously running with refills.
Spray
Direct application to objects (carrier, bedding, scratched surfaces).
Best for: targeted use (carrier before vet visit, freshly marked spot). Lasts: 4-5 hours per application. Cost: $20-30 per bottle, lasts months in occasional use.
Collar
Pheromone collar (less common in US than spray/diffuser).
Best for: travel. Less popular in US market than diffusers/sprays.
When to use which
Single-cat household, new move
Classic diffuser in the room where the cat spends most time. Run for 30 days minimum.
Multi-cat conflict
Multicat diffuser. May need both Classic and Multicat depending on what's happening.
Urine marking
Classic diffuser near the marking site + spray on the marked area after cleaning.
Vet visit anxiety
Classic spray in carrier 15 minutes before the cat enters.
New scratching post the cat ignores
Feliscratch on the post + reward when cat uses it.
Adopting a new cat
Classic diffuser before arrival, in the room where the new cat will be confined for the introduction protocol.
General "anxious cat"
Trial of Classic diffuser for 30 days. If no improvement, consider veterinary behaviorist consultation.
Setup tips
- Plug in 24 hours before the expected stress event (vet visit, move).
- Replace refill every 30 days. Older refills emit less.
- Don't combine multiple products without veterinary guidance.
- Don't expect overnight effect. Most studies show 7-14 days for changes.
Alternatives
- Comfort Zone (Ceva, same manufacturer as Feliway): similar product line at different branding, mainly sold at Walmart and pet stores. Check on Amazon โ
- Generic / "pheromone" diffusers: skip these. The Feliway formulation is patent-protected; "pheromone" branded products from other companies often have ambiguous content.
Limits
If pheromones don't help after 30-60 days of consistent use:
- Rule out medical causes (urinary, dental, thyroid).
- Audit environment (litter boxes, vertical space, resource competition).
- Consult a veterinary behaviorist for behavioral diagnosis.
Pheromones are a tool, not a solution. They work alongside environmental management and behavior protocols, not instead of them.
Cost summary
| Scenario | Annual cost |
|---|---|
| Single diffuser running continuously | $200-300 |
| Two diffusers (multi-room or multicat) | $400-600 |
| Occasional spray use only | $30-50 |
| One-time use (carrier spray for one move) | $25 |
What to check
- Whether the diffuser is plugged in the room where stress is happening (not a distant room).
- Whether your refills are within their 30-day life.
- Whether you've ruled out medical causes for the behavior the pheromone is meant to address.
- Whether you have a behavioral plan running in parallel (the pheromone is supportive, not curative).
- Whether you've consulted a veterinary behaviorist if 30-60 days of consistent use shows no effect.
